What would you put in your suitcase if you had to leave your home tonight? This image forms part of a series about this exact question. This is a study of what and who we hold precious; the meaning it gives our lives and how it shapes our future. Carmela left a depressed worn-torn Italy in the 50’s taking with her, her mother’s shawl. In her hand she holds a momento from the Italian government marking her departed husband’s emigration. With this series I honour those who are readily forgotten in our world, they are not famous, but humble ordinary people. Nevertheless, these very people make indelible ripples on generations that follow.
